the becoming, continuum (1995)
People think of recognize or create something by constructing a 'mental model' of the world and themselves. Artists bring that mental model to the realm of art making. Jeehee Lee's works reflect her own mental model of the world where her interest drifts from herself to the people around her and finally to the human society organized by such human being.
In her work, the drama of human life is captured and expressed through the language of Nature's image and phenomena rather than the definite shape of a human figure. Her approach seems to be derived from a long period of training as an Oriental painter. The trace of such a background is naturally revealed in her current works, as her artistic process is akin to those of Oriental painters who continuously observe, express and often empathize Nature. In her mental model, however, Nature is not depicted just as a contemplative scenery. Rather, it appears as a system of metaphor which incubates indefinite inspiration and dynamism. For example, in her computer work series, "the becoming", she explores the meaning of 'the being out of the becoming'. The seeds deposited at a strange place and in an unknown time zone, probably by wind or some other accidental factors tell the story of human beings who endeavor to find the position and meaning of their existence. Wildflowers, weeds, withered grass-insignificant and humble as they are, are still indispensable parts of the whole, just as the existence of human beings is essential to the conscious universe. But, to Jeehee Lee, the concept of "the being" is not complete in itself. it is just one form of 'continuous becoming'. Her concept on the process of 'continuous becoming' often takes the form of circlesa, seeds, eggs, eggcrates and clocks in her work space. She want to convey the meaning of the cosmic circulation with a circle-perfect but still containing a space for possibilities, finite but with no beginning and end. Especially, "continuity of shape, light, sound, and time" installation made by eggs and their crates with electric media(light and sound) supports her interpretation that all the existing forms of Nature is but one product of the whole process. Eggcrates, which are thrown away after finishing their duty, provide an interesting motif in the sense that they act as a shelter of life, mimicking a sitting hen, even though they are lifeless. The impeccable shape of eggs, the lapse of time we can perceive between broken eggs and unbroken eggs, the irregular flow of time generated by electrical and sound signal, the numerous different possibilities the eggs have even though they are put in the standardized eggcrates. We can peek the various lifestyles of human beings who breathe together within the boundary of the society. 2-D video animation which is projected in one compartment of the gallery demonstrates dynamism and interplay between time and space. It approaches us s an attempt to strike a balance between the polar things such as absolute time symbolized by calendar and clock and relative time recognized by human consciousness, the material and mental, eternity and moment, part and the whole. This sense of balance reflects the fact that she is searching for the possibility through he new media- computer, while embracing her personal history of Oriental painting. Today, artists who struggle with the artistic pursuit in electronic media often experience the conflicts between the 'pulling' from the traditional artistic concept and the 'pushing' to a new style. To solve this problem artists have two options: one is to addict to the computer's own expressional capability and the other is to use computer only as a tool. Art theorist has thought that artists tend to use the new media to find its own unique style which parallels the former style. These days, however, this observation turns out to be more and more obsolete. That is, the terminology 'computer art' has begun to be substituted by 'computer aided art' or 'computer used in art'. This phenomenon is caused by the fact that, nowadays, computers are used for the different goals in almost all the sphere of daily life and can not occupy their unique position. The early 'computer art' in 1950s and 1960s emphasized the esthetics of geometrical shapes, mathematical precision and systematism on the background of the European constructivism. This trend was partially related with the difficulty of computer programming. Therefore, the term 'computer art' was tied with the form and contents of the computer itself or its operational capability. In fact, computer had its special way of expression that people could not imitate or create, so that computer art had been thought to be able to establish a position as a new genre of art. But beginging 1980s, communication and interacting between people and computers as well as operational capability of computers has been drastically enhanced. Image digitizing, processing, animation, 3D modeling, painting system, digital video editing, and sound synthesis have Become popular. The artist who utilize such new capabilities of computers began to observe their art style classified as 'conceptual art' or 'installation' not as 'computer art'. Can a computer be the media which can help to spawn a completely new art style? Or is it only a capable new tool? Artist Jeehee Lee takes the latter position. To her, the computer is just a tool to catch and transform the image in her process of art-making. Analyzing her series of "the becoming", we can find that to her computer is an essential tool to process the images. Those works derive from a huge collection of pictorial material-a kind of photograph collages(dandelion seeds, fossil, eggs, beans, leaves…). Scanner or digitizing camera captures images that are conceived as interesting in artist's mental model and extracts a specific element from it. Those images are transformed to the digital symbol and stored in the computer. Any source of the image- whether it is from a photograph or video channel, it can be copied, stored and recalled as a digital symbol. In addition, those sources can be cut, moved distorted and changed colors freely anytime. As the image can be changed easily even t the last step of processing an art work, impromptu transformation is possible without the physical difficulties in traditional drawing and painting. The biggest change that such an instrumental method can bring to an artist is that the artist can experience the whole process of art, free from the burdens of traditional art-making constraints. The dynamic work within the electronic space and the holistic process makes the artist free to grope for the balance among old and new, open and close, and people and nature. Written by Minsoo Kim (professor, College of Fine art, Seoul National University) |
