Probing space & (1997)
Many techniques have been developed to capture the three dimensional space in the plane. Some describe an object with such a realism that it would come out of the 2 dimensional surface at any moment; on the other hand, others try to depict the essence of an object instead of the superficial realism. I am not so much interested in the calculated and realistic expression of the space as a new spatial paradigm and the change in relationship derived from the very existence of an object. There exists one object. When another one is added, a new relationship is formed. Through a transparent object, the background mixed with the foreground, resulting in a new space… Light enlivens the space and everything in it plays with the light-absorbing, filtering and reflecting. I wanted to embrace the newborn space and a myriad of different views to receive it, so that the diversity could accommodate its secret nature as well as its external form. Butterfly. It is such familiar object from our youth. Not to mention the songs, we can meet this symbol of tenderness and elegance almost everywhere. I found myself drawing a butterfly in my old photograph album. Feminine, soft and affectionate butterflies. Are they flying only in a leisurely way, displaying their ethereal grace? The caterpillar's hardship under the threat of insecticides and pollution, the terror of silence inside a cocoon endured with the hope for reincarnation-Is it not the heavy load of life itself hanging on their fluttering wings that makes them so beautiful? Butterflies and space may be viewed as myself and the space that I belong to. This space can be a visible one or invisible, imaginary one, in other words, a field of relationship. The existence of a butterfly destroys the tranquility of space and a new field of relationship is created on the remains of destruction. The balance and spatial relationship is broken again by the intruding light and a new relationship is generated… Endless changes continue. Often two and three dimensional space coexiest, or they move on to yet another dimension. The web of reflections blurs the boundary between the real and the imaginary. I may be dreaming of a butterfly and it may also be dreaming of me, as in the dream of Chuang Tzu, while I am pondering how many aspects of an elephant I have caught in my own interpretation of the objects.
